Job Title: Senior Grid Manager

Job Description: Job Purpose Summary:
The incumbent will be responsible for leading technical discussions with ESKOM on behalf of Company. Managing projects related to interaction between users (solar & battery storage) and the grid, and ensuring that projects are delivered efficiently (balancing scope, cost and time to ensure best possible quality). Act as the Company focal point for grid connection processes and technical, commercial and regulatory issues surrounding grid compliance.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities by Dimensions:
Contributing to Company growth strategy by maintaining existing client relationships and developing new ones. You’ll engage with potential new clients and contacts to communicate company expertise and support competitive tenders.
Maintaining an understanding of ongoing developments in the market, including: innovation projects, power system advisory, electrical design (MD&HV) and power system studies.
Manage and optimise grid connection process at all stages from initial site selection, feasibility assessment and connection application submission, through offer process, design and functional specification to construction, commissioning/testing, energisation and commercial operation.
Work with the wider company's team to ensure timely and within budget Project Development including project reporting, with key responsibility for all Grid and Electrical aspects of sites. 
Support other members of the company team in the early stage development with grid assessment of sites. 
Contribute to, and interpret high-level electrical design and functional specification for projects, including solar/turbines, substation and wind farm MV network.
Work closely with the Company Project Development team in scoping, assessing and negotiating the technical & commercial aspects and designs of Solar/Battery, EPC & related tender submissions and contracts.  And subsequently manage and track performance against Employer’s Requirements.
Ensure grid risks are minimised with best value delivered whilst monitoring and communicating risks to project teams to ensure business cases are up to date with all project delivery timescales, costs and energy impacts (constraints / curtailment / TLAF / DLAF / Electrical losses). 
 

Education/Experience Requirements:
 
University degree in Engineering with emphasis on Electrical or Power from a recognized university. Second degree in Business Administration is preferred.

Minimum of 10 years of experience with emphasis on managing grid connection processes for renewable energy projects primarily in South Africa.

Technically strong with relevant electrical engineering experience.

Prior experience working for, or with ESKOM different teams.

As Company requires a high level of expertise, the above-mentioned educational requirements   are compensated for through extensive years of experience in a related sector or field.
 

Required Special Skills:

Ability to develop and build relationships with external clients.

Going forward,  the ability to support the development of an internal team of engineers.

Ability and desire to manage project teams and deliver projects to a high standard.

Ability to read and understand the financial models and the commercial implications of the grid costs.
Commercial awareness of the energy industry.
Good working knowledge of the full lifecycle of regulatory frameworks for the connection of renewable projects to the grid for both Transmission and Distribution projects.
Strong analytical capability.
Good communication and presentation skills.

Good adaptability to multinational environment, with wide exposure to various cultures and customs.

Good technical understanding of renewable assets and Power and Utilities Investments

Ability to work with teams from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Communications and Working Relationships:
 
    • Frequent contact and direct reporting line to the Company Business Development to provide progress updates, resolve issues and receive higher approval where necessary.
    • Contact with regulators and external legal consultants
